An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is one that has grown to its full potential. Adult is a term employed in relation to humans to mean social and legal concepts. A legal adult, in contrast to "minors" or "non-adults, is someone who is of the majority age and thus considered to be independent, responsible and self-sufficient. An adult who is legally mature can be described as a major. The point at which a person becomes an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of maturity may differ based upon the nation or legal system as well as the psychological condition of the child.

If a person attains full physical and intellectual maturity this is called adulthood. Most people think that adulthood begins at age 20 or more. Middle age starts at approximately 40 and is followed by the elderly age of 60. There are three major levels of adulthood: early the age of adulthood (18 up to the mid-30s) and middle adulthood (mid-30s until mid-60s), and later adulthood (mid-60s until death). At the point we are in the age of early adulthood (20 to the early 40s) the physical development has been completed, however the size and weight of our bodies may increase slightly. As we enter the first years of adulthood, we are physically and mentally at the peak. Strength of muscles, reaction time, sensory ability, as well as cardiac function, all hit their peak.
